ZERO Box Lodge Porto

Accommodation Rua do Ateneu Comercial do Porto, 13 Porto, Portugal 2018

ZERO BOX LODGE . 78 boxes

In the heart of Porto between the emblematic Rua de Santa Catarina, Rua Passos Manuel, Rua Sá da Bandeira, and a stone’s throw from Mercado do Bolhão, ZERO brings to the city a new form of accommodation that presents a revolutionary way of experiencing tourism and the cities that receive it.
The building dates from 1883 and was built to house a mythical shirt factory – “Confiança” – the place where the first film made in Portugal by Aurélio da Paz dos Reis in 1896 was shot, in which the workers’ departure from this factory is portrayed by Santa Catarina Street.
Created not to be a hotel or a hostel, the rooms are windowless boxes, designed for the guest to rest regardless of the time of day.
The inspiration for the ZERO Box Lodge comes from the Japanese oriental accommodation models called ‘capsule hotels’ adapted to a western context in which the capsules have evolved into larger spaces, with a built-in bathroom, enough for two people, with a guarantee of comfort and privacy. The absence of amenities remains, but with one objective – the creation of common areas of interaction with large dimensions and various services.
On the ground floor, a bar (Big Bad Bank) and a restaurant (o Carniceiro) open to the outside and providing an interaction between guests and the local public of Porto. The decoration made with reused furniture aims to make the space comfortable, incorporating contemporary decorative elements such as tile panels hand painted by the artist Paulo Ramuni or the covering of an old safe with a carpet designed by Diogo Muñoz recreating the famous existing tile panels in the churches of the city of Porto.
At ZERO Porto, when you are creative, you sleep for free. The Free Room, a replica of a ZERO room, is at the entrance and can be occupied by those who present artistic proposals from the most diverse areas of the space use.
ZERO Porto also pays tribute to the Portuguese author Gonçalo M. Tavares, dedicating a bookstore composed of his books in 53 languages, published in more than 30 different countries.
This space is filled with creative details that offer guests and clients a unique and differentiated stay.
