The new accommodation format occupies the old Garagem Santa Cruz, on the first line of the Mondego river in front of the city park. The rooms are 44 wooden compartments, without windows, designed specifically for the guests’ rest, at any time of the day. A disruptive, provocative and fun vision of the usual hotel stay.
The inspiration for the accommodation comes from the Japanese oriental models called ‘capsule hotels’ adapted to a western context. The capsules have evolved into larger spaces, with a built-in bathroom, room with space for two people, guaranteeing comfort and privacy. As in the Japanese models, spaces are stripped of amenities and the main objective is really the rest, at the pace of each one.
The project aims to be a reference for the inhabitants, for the artistic and student community and for all the people who are passing through or living in Coimbra.
